Daily Obscure/Underrated Anime Recommendations Number Ninety
Key the Metal Idol
(Story: Tokiko Mima, nicknamed "Key," is a 17-year-old girl living in the Japanese countryside who, despite her human-like appearance, is a robot. When Key's grandfather Dr. Murao Mima passes away, he leaves her a dying message, telling her that she can become a real girl if she is able to make thirty thousand friends. Thus, Key moves from the quiet Mamio Valley to the busy streets of Tokyo, where she soon runs into her childhood friend Sakura Kuriyagawa.
Key quickly becomes enamored with idol singer Miho Utsuse and wonders if becoming a singer will allow her to make the amount of friends needed for her to become human. But Miho carries a ominous secret: she is connected to Jinsaku Ajou, an old rival of Dr. Mima trying to make new a breakthrough in robotic weaponry. (Notes: Rated TV-MA for a reason. But i think this is a solid one. Key is an endearing character. And if you know me, i have a bias towards older anime and their art and animation and nusic. It's just incomparable. There's some strangeness in this one but it's cool overall. The studio behind this one is Studio Pierrot. They're the same animation studio behind Naruto, Naruto: Shippuden, Bleach, Bleach: Thousand Year Blood War, Black Clover, Tokyo Ghoul, Yona of the Dawn, Great Teacher Onizuka, Yu Yu Hakusho, Boruto, Beelzebub, Twin Star Exorcists, etc. You can find Key the Metal Idol on RetroCrush, Freevee, Amazon Prime Video, and Crunchyroll's premium subscription as far as i can tell.) The Daughter of 20 Faces
(Story: Chiko is the daughter of the wealthy Mikamo family who has to live with her aunt and uncle after her parents passed away. Because her aunt wants to inherit the Mikamo family's wealth, she gives Chiko poisoned food. One day, however, she's kidnapped by the Nijuu Mensou (20 Faces) and decides to join his clan.)
(Genre: Action, Adventure, Mystery)
(Released 2008; 22 Episodes; TV-14)
(Notes: Now this one is criminally underrated. I do not know how this one didnt catch on when it first came out. One of the Anime Studios behind it was Studio Bones! Y'know the same animation studio that had a hand in/was behind Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Soul Eater, My Hero Academia, the Noragami series, Mob Psycho 100, Bungou Stray Dogs, Ouran Highschool Host Club, Darker than Black, Kekkai Sensen, Gosick, Eureka Seven, Sk8 the Infinity, etc. So im super surprised this show didnt get bigger tbh. The Mystic Archives of Dantalian
(Story: Six months ago, Lord Hugh Anthony Disward, also known as Huey, lost his eccentric grandfather, Sir Wesley Disward, who was a renowned collector of rare books. His grandfather's will states that, in order to inherit his manor and everything inside it, he must take guardianship over the Bibliotheca Mystica de Dantalian—an archive that contains forbidden knowledge—and also take care of a mysterious girl called Dalian.)
(Genre: Action, Mystery, Supernatural, Detective, Historical)
(Released 2011; 12 episodes; TV-MA)
(Notes: Well, for one, no unnecessary romance for the most part so that's a relief. I hate forced romance/pairings. It's a surprisingly dark show with some good jokes and moments. I enjoyed it. And it is short. It doesn't overstay its welcome. Oh and this anime is by Studio Gainax. You know, Gainax is the anime studio behind Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt, Neon Genesis Evangelion, FLCL,Kare Kano(Which i recommended before), Top wo Nerae! Gunbuster(Which i also recommended) and Medaka Box. This is a short, sweet little show. If you have some free time, give it a watch. You might like it.) Read Note
