Heat Guy J (Heads up: this one can get graphic at times)
(Story: In the city of Judoh, Claire Leonelli has inherited leadership of the Mafia group "Vampire" following the death of his father. To keep Claire's and other criminal activities in check, the city's Bureau of Urban Safety has Special Services Division operative Daisuke Aurora and the super android codenamed "J" (whose identity is apparently kept in secrecy, as androids are banned in the city). With both of them around, crime now has little room to breathe in Judoh. Source: MyAnimeList)
(Genre: Action, Adventure, Sci-fi, Crime)
(Released 2002; 25 Episodes; TV-14)
(Notes: Ayoo thought i should recommend another action series and here ya go. The aesthetic and vibes of this one are just... chef's kiss. Super intense. More intense than I thought it'd be. It's kinda still got a 90s vibe to it but i guess that makes sense. It was made in the early 2000s. Still got that residual 90s in it. It isn't too long. I mean, it didn't over stay its welcome and that's great. Surprised it flew under the radar as much as it did. Literally no one mentions this show. It's free on Crunchyroll, you gotta buy it on Amazon Prime Video I think. I checked Retrocrush. I don't think it's there. Still check out Retrocrush anyway. They got a ton of classic, old anime. And if you got the time, give Heat Guy J a try if it's your thing.) Read Note

Sound of the Sky (So Ra No Wo To)
(Story: On the outskirts of the country of Helvetia rests the tranquil town of Seize. Upon its cobbled streets, citizens go about their daily lives, undisturbed by the increasingly tense military relations between Helvetia and the neighboring Roman Empire.
It is under these circumstances that the 1121st platoon of the Helvetian army, stationed at the Clocktower Fortress in Seize, receives a new recruit in the young and spirited Kanata Sorami. Having joined the military to fulfill her dream of learning to play the bugle, she excitedly accepts the tutelage of the Sergeant Major, Rio Kazumiya, who happens to be a skilled trumpeter. Working alongside them are the aloof mechanic, Noël Kannagi, the feisty gunner, Kureha Suminoya, and the compassionate Captain Felicia Heideman; together, they experience the beauty of life in Seize and the lasting joy of a community that has persevered in spite of the crumbling world around them.
Alongside Seikimatsu Occult Gakuin and Senkou no Night Raid, So Ra No Wo To was part of the "Anime no Chikara" project, a project to create more original anime, not based on any existing media.
Source: MyAnimeList)
(Genre: Sci-Fi, Slice-of-Life, Iyashikei)
(Released 2010; 12 Episodes; TV-14)
(Notes: Well this is a very sweet one. It has a darker tone than a lot of anime of its genre [Iyashikei] but that definitely didn't take away from my enjoyment of it. I'm honestly surprised it is as overlooked as it is. The story is great and uplifting, the animation is wonderful and the characters are easy to fall in love with. The anime studio behind this series is A-1 Pictures. A-1 Pictures is an anime studio that's had their hand in a lot of iconic and well-known anime such as Black Butler, Black Butler II, Fairy Tail, Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day, Blue Exorcist, Uta no Prince-sama: Maji Love 1000%, Your Lie in April, Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic, Sword Art Online, Sword Art Online II, Aldnoah.Zero, Erased, Black Butler: Book of Circus, Blend S, Darling in the Franxx, Sword Art Online: Alicization, Lycoris Recoil, Kaguya-sama: Love Is War, Wotakoi: Love Is Hard for Otaku, Nier: Automata Ver1.1a, Mashle: Magic and Muscles, AND they're currently working on/going to be the anime studio behind Solo Leveling and Fate/strange Fake. Anyway, Sound of the Sky melted my heart tbh i recommend it. It's short. You can find it on Crunchyroll and Funimation but i think you nay need the Premium Subscriptions to actually watch it. I've had Crunchyroll Premium for awhile so I'm not sure it's actually behind that wall or not. You can buy it on Apple TV and I saw a listing for it on Prime Video but I'm not sure if it is still available but i know a lot of you probably use the "unoffical" websites to watch anime anyway. Go off. A
lso, try anime planet if you haven't already. You won't find Sound of the Sky but you can watch a lot of other anime for free and legally on there. i mean- honestly i use it because im tired of all the "singles in your area" ads i get from other free sites. I know why they're there. They need to make money somehow but still. The popups are crazy lmao. Okay. Rambling over. This isnt my diary lol. Watch Sound of the Sky. Also I know it looks like K-ON hush. Bye.) Read Note

Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju
(Story: Yotarou is a former yakuza member fresh out of prison and fixated on just one thing: rather than return to a life of crime, the young man aspires to take to the stage of rakugo, a traditional Japanese form of comedic storytelling. Inspired during his incarceration by the performance of distinguished practitioner Yakumo Yuurakutei, he sets his mind on meeting the man who changed his life. After hearing Yotarou's desperate appeal for his mentorship, Yakumo is left with no choice but to accept his very first apprentice.
As he eagerly begins his training, Yotarou meets Konatsu, an abrasive young woman who has been under Yakumo's care ever since her beloved father Sukeroku Yuurakutei, another prolific rakugo performer, passed away. Through her hidden passion, Yotarou is drawn to Sukeroku's unique style of rakugo despite learning under contrasting techniques. Upon seeing this, old memories and feelings return to Yakumo who reminisces about a much earlier time when he made a promise with his greatest rival.
Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu is a story set in both the past and present, depicting the art of rakugo, the relationships it creates, and the lives and hearts of those dedicated to keeping the unique form of storytelling alive.

(Genre: Drama, Historical, Romance)

(Notes: Okay, so as far as I can tell, you can only find this one on Crunchyroll. I mean, if you don't already just pirate anime tbh. But that ain't my business. Y'all can do what you want. I ain't involved with your shenanigans, you hooligans. lmao okay so this is a nice one. It's like...a breath of fresh air in general. It just has this light feel to it without sacrificing depth and character. It just has a vibe i dont get from alot of other anime. And it's one of the rare Josei anime. y'know , the anime/manga genre aimed at adult women. Think, like, Nana. Nana is josei. I think. I'm pretty sure. This lovely show is animated by Studio Deen; the same anime studio behind Konosuba, Fate/Stay Night, the original Higurashi... don't get too excited, they also did Seven Deadly Sins. But other than that, they have some bangers. Can't stand Seven Deadly Sins but that's another story [how hard is it to NOT make a grown man attracted to the one chick that looks like a literal child why couldn't the creator just make her look like a GROWN WOMAN i dont wanna hear the "u h m she's actually 2 million years old" argument so sHUT PLEASE no loli defenders allowed in my space i have nieces and i dont need that creepy energy around me so LEAVE] okay aside from that rant. ArtisWitch (First Episode included in rest of this note)
(Story: There is a rumor doing the rounds in Harajuku: somewhere in the back streets of Ura-Harajuku, a witch and her mysterious shop serve those whose wishes have gone unheard, giving them an opportunity to unlock their hearts' greatest desires.
Believing this to be an ideal arrangement, the proud apprentice witch Nina strives to fulfill her customers' wishes while her power and influence grow accordingly. However, not all wishes are meant to come true—and not all of them lead to a happy ending. As Nina is compelled to peer deeper into the human psyche, she soon discovers the dark side of a witch's obligations, and her ambitions begin to clash with her wish to comfort the entire world.
Source: MyAnimeList)
(Genre: Slice-of-Life, Supernatural)
(Released 2021; ONA; 6 episodes; TV-14)
(Notes: Okay. The episodes are really short and the series is super short but in that short time; I'd say the experience was worth it. I know CGI anime is usually not well-liked but give this one a shot. You can tell they tried to put effort into it. The music is great. I love the designs and the ideas amd plot are creative. ArtisWitch is a collaboration project between Sunrise and Japanese talent agency AsobiSystem that features Harajuku art, fashion, and music. And y'know, Sunrise is the same anime studio behind Cowboy Bebop, Gintama, Code Geass, Love Live, Inuyasha and a few other iconic anime. Oh, and you can find ArtisWitch's episodes on YouTube along with music videos and PVs for the series. It's alot of fun. And Ruru and Haruka are best girls sorry. We also adore Akihiro in this household lmao. But Nina is great too I can't deciiiide and the FASHION oh my lord i can't stop gushing about this showww. I'd also call this Magical Girl adjacent. Sorry. It's the law. I say it counts. lmao. There's so much more that can be done with this one. I wish there was more of it if only for the characters alone. I'd love to see a 2D animated interpretation but it looks good as it is too. And also, the Artiswitch YouTube channel itself has some other cool things in it too. The other music videos are so pretty and well done too! So maybe check that out as well. The characters; the messages, etc. This series, franchise, whatever it is; it needs more love. And the episodes are so short so...lemme just put the first episode below the PV down here for y'all if you're interested! And a few PVs for a Music Video project they did awhile back! Be sure to check out the channel if you want more!) Read Note

Key the Metal Idol
(Story: Tokiko Mima, nicknamed "Key," is a 17-year-old girl living in the Japanese countryside who, despite her human-like appearance, is a robot. When Key's grandfather Dr. Murao Mima passes away, he leaves her a dying message, telling her that she can become a real girl if she is able to make thirty thousand friends. Thus, Key moves from the quiet Mamio Valley to the busy streets of Tokyo, where she soon runs into her childhood friend Sakura Kuriyagawa.
Key quickly becomes enamored with idol singer Miho Utsuse and wonders if becoming a singer will allow her to make the amount of friends needed for her to become human. But Miho carries a ominous secret: she is connected to Jinsaku Ajou, an old rival of Dr. Mima trying to make new a breakthrough in robotic weaponry. As Key works to become a real girl, Ajou sets a dangerous plan into action, and it turns out there's much more to Key than meets the eye. Source: MyAnimeList)
(Genre: Action, Drama, Sci-Fi, Psychological)
(Released 1994; OVA; 15 episodes: TV-MA)
(Notes: Rated TV-MA for a reason. But i think this is a solid one. Key is an endearing character. And if you know me, i have a bias towards older anime and their art and animation and nusic. It's just incomparable. There's some strangeness in this one but it's cool overall. The studio behind this one is Studio Pierrot. They're the same animation studio behind Naruto, Naruto: Shippuden, Bleach, Bleach: Thousand Year Blood War, Black Clover, Tokyo Ghoul, Yona of the Dawn, Great Teacher Onizuka, Yu Yu Hakusho, Boruto, Beelzebub, Twin Star Exorcists, etc. You can find Key the Metal Idol on RetroCrush, Freevee, Amazon Prime Video, and Crunchyroll's premium subscription as far as i can tell.) Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water
(Story: In 1889, the world is on the pinnacle of great discoveries in technology. In mankind's grasp for the future, a sinister foe known only as Gargoyle, obsessed with restoring the former Atlantean empire to the glory it once held, begins his plans to take over the world. Nadia, with the help of a young inventor, Jean Roque Lartigue, and Captain Nemo of the submarine Nautilus, must fight to save the world from Gargoyle and Neo-Atlantis. Based on the Novel '20,000 Leagues Under the Sea' by Jules Verne.)
(Genre: Adventure, Comedy, Romance, Sci-Fi)
(Released 1990; 39 episodes; TV-14)
(Notes: This is one where you've probably seen a chatracteror two before but you've never seen the show. Well, I'm here to officially recommend it. And I haven't mentioned this before but i get the story/synopsis from MyAnimeList since... I'm bad at summarizing things. I'll go off on a tangent and add irrelevant crap. Anyway, did you know this series won the Animage Anime Grand Prix in 1990? AND it's Studio Gainax's FIRST ever anime. Remainder: Gainax is responsible for Neon Genesis Evangelion, Royal Space Force, Gunbuster, Kare Kano, FLCL, Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi, Gurren Lagann, Corpse Princess, Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt, Medaka Box and Re: Cutie Honey. I like this one. It's cozy, charming, fun and the story and characters are great. Again, retro anime art style is peak. 10/10. This show needs way more love. So check it out if you can. It's on Crunchyroll, Sling TV, Apple TV, Vudu, RetroCrush i think [BTW RetroCrush is a free service that let's you watch old/classic/retro anime. It's where I found City Hunter, Gokudo and Kimagure Orange Road ; which are other shows I've recommended before. Check it out.], Amazon Prime Video if i remember correctly and there may be more but if i find more I'll edit this.) Read Note

Wolf's Rain
(Story: In a dying world, there exists an ancient legend: when the world ends, the gateway to paradise will be opened. This utopia is the sole salvation for the remnants of life in this barren land, but the legend also dictates that only wolves can find their way to this mythical realm. Though long thought to be extinct, wolves still exist and live amongst humans, disguising themselves through elaborate illusions.
A lone wolf named Kiba finds himself drawn by an intoxicating scent to Freeze City, an impoverished town under the rule of the callous Lord Orkham. Here, Kiba discovers that wolves Hige, Tsume, and Toboe have been drawn in by the same aroma. By following the fragrance of "Lunar Flowers," said to be the key to opening the door to their ideal world, the wolves set off on a journey across desolate landscapes and crumbling cities to find their legendary promised land. However, they are not the only ones seeking paradise, and those with more sinister intentions will do anything in their power to reach it first.)
(Genre: Action, Adventure, Drama, Fantasy, Mystery, Sci-Fi)
(Released 2003; 26 episodes; TV-14)
(Notes: This used to play on old Toonami/Adult Swim. And yet another anime from the animation studio Bones. Remainder that they're the ones behind Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, My Hero Academia, Soul Eater, Noragami, Mob Psycho 100, Bungou Stray Dogs, Ouran High School Host Club, SK8 the Infinity, etc. And honestly? Wolf's Rain is a banger. Another classic really. I'd say it's a high tier anime in my opinion; characters, world building, animation, it's great. Check it out. I mean, if you like wolves maybe you already know about it lmao. I was trying to think of a wolf pun but I'm not subjecting y'all to that. Also, r.i.p to the original creator and screenwriter of Wolf's Rain Keiko Kobumoto. She passed away in 2021; fairly recently. Rest in Paradise.) Read Note

(Story: The story takes place in 19th century China during the Qing Dynasty, where the Emperor was weakened and the country was close to chaos. It is also during a fictitious era called "The Era of the Cooking Wars". It was an era in which top chefs with different cooking styles tried their best to improve their skills and to become the best chef in China. It is a country where insulting a high-grade chef or fooling around with cooking could land a person in a jail, and impersonating a top-chef is as good as usurpation of authority. Chefs compete with each other in order to gain respect and even power, but also with the risks of losing everything.
The country of China has four major regions: Beijing, Szechuan, Shanghai, and Guangdong.
The beginning of the story takes place in Szechuan, Mao's birthplace.
After the death of Mao's mother, Pai, who was called the 'Fairy of Cuisine', Mao becomes a Super Chef in order to take the title as Master Chef of his mother's restaurant. However, before he takes his mother's place as Master Chef, he continues to travel China in order to learn more of the many ways of cooking, in the hopes of becoming a legendary chef, just like his mother. During his journey, he meets great friends and fierce rivals who wish to challenge him in the field of cooking.)
(Genre: Action, Comedy, Drama, Gourmet/Cooking)
(Released 1997; 52 episodes; TV-14)
(Notes: If i wanna watch a cooking anime, this is a good pick...if you don't want the 'awkwardness' of Food Wars tbh. If you understand what i'm implying. It's enjoyable. Not perfect, but it's fun and the setting is unique. It's a bit goofy and over the top but hey. It's fun so i don't mind. There was a reboot but we don't talk about that.) Read Note

(Notes: Been awhile, huh? oh well im back. This is another Studio Bones production. The series is based on the comic of the same title by Mark Millar and Leinil Francis Yu. It serves as a spin-off to Jupiter's Legacy. It was on Netflix but i don't think it was super popular outside of the month it came out. It's short so it wont take long to get through. I honestly really like the animation.) Read Note

Kaiba
(Story: In a world where memories exist in memory chips separate from the body, death of the body no longer means death of the soul. It is possible for memories to be viewed, altered, and transferred between bodies. These memory chips are used by the rich to obtain eternal lives in carefully selected bodies, while for the poor, selling their own bodies and conserving their souls in the chips often become the only way to earn a living. An electrolytic cloud in the sky serves as a barrier between the heavens of the fortunate and the underworld of the destitute, making this social division impregnable.
One day, a man named Kaiba wakes up in an empty room with no memories, a mysterious hole in his chest, and a locket holding the picture of an unknown woman. After escaping an attack and stumbling upon a decrepit village of underworld residents, he begins his adventure across the different planets of this strange universe to find out more about his own identity and the woman he once knew.
Through a journey of self-discovery and acceptance, Kaiba weaves together tales of souls and spirits and explores the importance of memories.)
(Genre: Adventure, Award Winning, Mystery, Romance, Sci-Fi)
(Released 2008; 12 episodes; TV-MA)
(Notes: Bruh this is trippy but in a good way. a GREAT way actually. This show is actually amazing. A true gem and another banger from MADHOUSE. It was directed by Masaaki Yuasa. You may be familiar with his other work, Masaaki Yuasa is a Japanese director, screenwriter, and animator affiliated with Science SARU, a Japanese animation studio which he co-founded with producer Eunyoung Choi in 2013. Recognized for his idiosyncratic art style and directorial voice, Yuasa began his career as an animator on the landmark television series Chibi Maruko-chan (1990–1992) and Crayon Shin-chan (1992–present), before moving into directing with the feature film Mind Game (2004) and developing a cult appeal following.
Yuasa spent much of the 2000s and early 2010s working in television directing, helming a trio of series, Kemonozume (2006), Kaiba (2008), and The Tatami Galaxy (2010), before releasing the crowdfunded short film Kick-Heart (2013).
At Science SARU, Yuasa focused on directing both television and feature film productions, starting with an episode of the American animated series Adventure Time (2014), and continuing with Ping Pong the Animation (2014), The Night Is Short, Walk On Girl (2017), Lu Over the Wall (2017), Devilman Crybaby (2018), Ride Your Wave (2019), Super Shiro (2019), Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken! (2020),Japan Sinks: 2020 (2020),[and Inu-Oh (2021). His works, as you can guess, have won plenty of awards and Kaiba is just as imaginative and unique as any of his other works. I implore you to check it out. Not just for the animation but for the characters and the story. It's beautiful in its own way.) Read Note

(Story: According to the theories of oneiromancy, dreams of dragons represent the struggle of losing yourself to your own anger. Fittingly, Souya Kuroi wakes up from a nightmare of a massive dragon destroying everything around him in a blaze of rainbow colored light. After being told that he lost his parents and memory in a strange accident, the waking world becomes another nightmare in itself. With this dream being his only memory, he has no choice but to be taken care of by his two strange guardians: the spunky and energetic maid Ginko, and a huge cat known only as "Sensei."
His new life is turned upside down when the denizens of Saromisaka City are beset by a teddy bear-shaped UFO. When military power proves to be ineffective, seven mysterious people rise up to fight off the monstrosity. These heroes destroy the invader in a flurry of rainbow colored lights, the very same lights that Souya saw in his nightmare.
With the alien threat repelled, these seven strangers find themselves facing a new adversary: Souya. Swearing vengeance upon the people who decimated his old life, he begins his crusade against these "heroes" and becomes embroiled in a struggle of galactic proportions.)
(Genre: Action, Sci-fi, Mecha)
(Released 2018; 12 episodes; TV-14)
(Notes: Another anime by J.C. Staff and a very criminally underrated one. Don't be fooled. It isn't what it seems to be. Trust me. There was more to it than I thought. The characters were well-developed and got better over time. And again, another short one that someone can breeze through in a short time. I can't believe it was shafted so hard. Deserves more attention. Give it a try. It may seem cliché at first but it grows on you.) Read Note

The Mystic Archives of Dantalian
(Story: Six months ago, Lord Hugh Anthony Disward, also known as Huey, lost his eccentric grandfather, Sir Wesley Disward, who was a renowned collector of rare books. His grandfather's will states that, in order to inherit his manor and everything inside it, he must take guardianship over the Bibliotheca Mystica de Dantalian—an archive that contains forbidden knowledge—and also take care of a mysterious girl called Dalian.)
(Genre: Action, Mystery, Supernatural, Detective, Historical)
(Released 2011; 12 episodes; TV-MA)
(Notes: Well, for one, no unnecessary romance for the most part so that's a relief. I hate forced romance/pairings. It's a surprisingly dark show with some good jokes and moments. I enjoyed it. And it is short. It doesn't overstay its welcome. Oh and this anime is by Studio Gainax. You know, Gainax is the anime studio behind Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt, Neon Genesis Evangelion, FLCL,Kare Kano(Which i recommended before), Top wo Nerae! Gunbuster(Which i also recommended) and Medaka Box. This is a short, sweet little show. If you have some free time, give it a watch. You might like it.) Read Note

The Rose of Versailles
(Story: In a time of class stratification and rising tensions amongst the impoverished population, the Austrian Empire sends Princess Marie Antoinette to France to be wed to Crown Prince Louis XVI. The political marriage is arranged to strengthen the alliance between both countries, but the future queen is deeply unsatisfied with her fate being decided for her. Upon arrival in the country, Marie Antoinette is acquainted with Oscar Fançois de Jarjayes—Commander of the Royal Guard.
Due to her father's desire for a son, Oscar is raised as a boy with an expectation to inherit his title as The Commander. Though she is revered by both men and women alike, Oscar cannot help but desire to live life as a woman instead of masquerading as a man. As Oscar reluctantly serves the young, spoiled queen, the growing resentment and suffering of the poor become harder for her to ignore—especially when Marie Antoinette frivolously spends her wealth.)
(Genre: Drama, Romance)
(Released 1979; 40 episodes; PG-13 Edit: im a dingus who had this as "PG-23" for 19 hours imma cry now)
(Notes: This is a very interesting one and a very important one in manga (and anime) history in general. This series was developed during a significant transitional period for shōjo manga (manga for girls) as a medium, characterized by the emergence of stories with complex narratives focused on politics and sexuality. The Rose of Versailles would ultimately become the first shōjo manga to achieve mainstream critical and commercial success, proving the genre's viability as a commercial category and granting the genre greater recognition among critics. It contributed significantly to the development of shōjo manga, and was one of the primary works responsible for its shift from a genre aimed at children to a genre aimed at adolescents and young adults. By 2022, the manga had sold over 23 million copies worldwide. So yeah. Also, underrated as heck especially given how influential it is. I wish it was brought up more. Not just for its importance but actual amazing story, characters, etc. If you have time, check it out. Also, these OP and ED songs are beautiful im gonna cry. I really miss these kinds of OP and ED songs tbh) Read Note
