Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju
(Story: Yotarou is a former yakuza member fresh out of prison and fixated on just one thing: rather than return to a life of crime, the young man aspires to take to the stage of rakugo, a traditional Japanese form of comedic storytelling. Inspired during his incarceration by the performance of distinguished practitioner Yakumo Yuurakutei, he sets his mind on meeting the man who changed his life. After hearing Yotarou's desperate appeal for his mentorship, Yakumo is left with no choice but to accept his very first apprentice.
As he eagerly begins his training, Yotarou meets Konatsu, an abrasive young woman who has been under Yakumo's care ever since her beloved father Sukeroku Yuurakutei, another prolific rakugo performer, passed away. Through her hidden passion, Yotarou is drawn to Sukeroku's unique style of rakugo despite learning under contrasting techniques. Upon seeing this, old memories and feelings return to Yakumo who reminisces about a much earlier time when he made a promise with his greatest rival.
Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu is a story set in both the past and present, depicting the art of rakugo, the relationships it creates, and the lives and hearts of those dedicated to keeping the unique form of storytelling alive.

(Notes: Okay, so as far as I can tell, you can only find this one on Crunchyroll. I mean, if you don't already just pirate anime tbh. But that ain't my business. Y'all can do what you want. I ain't involved with your shenanigans, you hooligans. lmao okay so this is a nice one. It's like...a breath of fresh air in general. It just has this light feel to it without sacrificing depth and character. It just has a vibe i dont get from alot of other anime. And it's one of the rare Josei anime. y'know , the anime/manga genre aimed at adult women. Think, like, Nana. Nana is josei. I think. I'm pretty sure. This lovely show is animated by Studio Deen; the same anime studio behind Konosuba, Fate/Stay Night, the original Higurashi... don't get too excited, they also did Seven Deadly Sins. But other than that, they have some bangers. Can't stand Seven Deadly Sins but that's another story [how hard is it to NOT make a grown man attracted to the one chick that looks like a literal child why couldn't the creator just make her look like a GROWN WOMAN i dont wanna hear the "u h m she's actually 2 million years old" argument so sHUT PLEASE no loli defenders allowed in my space i have nieces and i dont need that creepy energy around me so LEAVE] okay aside from that rant. Uhm. Yay Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju is great. No more sleeping on it please.) Read Note

2: Franken's Gears (Koji Morimoto)

(Genre: Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Mecha, Drama, Comedy, etc)
(Released 1987; OVA; Movie; 91 MIN; PG-13)
(Notes: Well. This was a trip. Uh. I dont wanna spoil too much but this was pretty interesting. Of course, the animation, detail and designs were amazing. Because yes. Retro anime art style is still the best. Fight me. I wish there were more projects like this still being made. It's just so creative. You may like some segments more than others but that's a given. They're all so wildly unique. You can find this film for free on RetroCrush, the full English sub on RetroCrush's YouTube channel, Tubi, Freevee, PlutoTV, Amazon Prime Video, Vudu, Peacock, SlingTV but for Crunchyroll i think you may need a premium subscription.) Voices of a Distant Star (Hoshi no Koe)
(Story: It is the year 2046, Noboru Terao and Mikako Nagamine are close friends who will soon be graduating junior high school. But after an alien attack on humanity, Mikako is selected for the UN military space expedition set to retaliate against the aliens. Separated, Noboru and Mikako attempt to keep in touch by sending emails to each other with their cell phones. Yet as the expedition journeys farther from Earth, the time it takes for them to transmit and receive each other's messages increases substantially.
Hoshi no Koe revolves around the relationship between this couple as they try to stay connected despite the growing distance between them.
Source: MyAnimeList)
(Genre: Drama, Romance, Sci-Fi, Mecha)
(Released 2002; OVA; 24 min; PG-13)
(Notes: Well, this is a short film. Not too long but i don't think it wastes the short time it's given. For how short it is, it is a little heartbreaker. Some CGI is outdated but other than that, it's not bad. The dub..isnt the best for this one. And I'm not even a person who hates English Dubs at all. But this one ...yeah...Music's great too. And this short film was created and animated by Makoto Shinkai. Yes, THAT Makoto Shinkai. The same Makoto Shinkai behind the anime films 5 Centimeters per Second, The Garden of Words, Your Name, Weathering with You and Suzume. So, check this one out. It's just 24 minutes so if you're looking for something sweet to pass the time, here ya go. Voices of a Distant Star was written, directed and produced by Makoto Shinkai on his Power Mac G4 using LightWave, Adobe Photoshop 5.0, Adobe After Effects 4.1 and Commotion 3.1 DV software. I am not joking. He made this on his laptop which explains a few more janky visuals but overall, it's impressive for..you know...being made on a LAPTOP. You can find it on Crunchyroll.) Read Note

Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water
(Story: In 1889, the world is on the pinnacle of great discoveries in technology. In mankind's grasp for the future, a sinister foe known only as Gargoyle, obsessed with restoring the former Atlantean empire to the glory it once held, begins his plans to take over the world. Nadia, with the help of a young inventor, Jean Roque Lartigue, and Captain Nemo of the submarine Nautilus, must fight to save the world from Gargoyle and Neo-Atlantis. Based on the Novel '20,000 Leagues Under the Sea' by Jules Verne.)
(Genre: Adventure, Comedy, Romance, Sci-Fi)
(Released 1990; 39 episodes; TV-14)
(Notes: This is one where you've probably seen a chatracteror two before but you've never seen the show. Well, I'm here to officially recommend it. And I haven't mentioned this before but i get the story/synopsis from MyAnimeList since... I'm bad at summarizing things. I'll go off on a tangent and add irrelevant crap. Anyway, did you know this series won the Animage Anime Grand Prix in 1990? AND it's Studio Gainax's FIRST ever anime. Remainder: Gainax is responsible for Neon Genesis Evangelion, Royal Space Force, Gunbuster, Kare Kano, FLCL, Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi, Gurren Lagann, Corpse Princess, Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt, Medaka Box and Re: Cutie Honey. I like this one. It's cozy, charming, fun and the story and characters are great. Again, retro anime art style is peak. 10/10. This show needs way more love. So check it out if you can. It's on Crunchyroll, Sling TV, Apple TV, Vudu, RetroCrush i think [BTW RetroCrush is a free service that let's you watch old/classic/retro anime. Kaiba
(Story: In a world where memories exist in memory chips separate from the body, death of the body no longer means death of the soul. It is possible for memories to be viewed, altered, and transferred between bodies. These memory chips are used by the rich to obtain eternal lives in carefully selected bodies, while for the poor, selling their own bodies and conserving their souls in the chips often become the only way to earn a living. An electrolytic cloud in the sky serves as a barrier between the heavens of the fortunate and the underworld of the destitute, making this social division impregnable.
One day, a man named Kaiba wakes up in an empty room with no memories, a mysterious hole in his chest, and a locket holding the picture of an unknown woman. After escaping an attack and stumbling upon a decrepit village of underworld residents, he begins his adventure across the different planets of this strange universe to find out more about his own identity and the woman he once knew.
Through a journey of self-discovery and acceptance, Kaiba weaves together tales of souls and spirits and explores the importance of memories.)
(Genre: Adventure, Award Winning, Mystery, Romance, Sci-Fi)
(Released 2008; 12 episodes; TV-MA)
(Notes: Bruh this is trippy but in a good way. a GREAT way actually. This show is actually amazing. A true gem and another banger from MADHOUSE. It was directed by Masaaki Yuasa. You may be familiar with his other work, Masaaki Yuasa is a Japanese director, screenwriter, and animator affiliated with Science SARU, a Japanese animation studio which he co-founded with producer Eunyoung Choi in 2013. Recognized for his idiosyncratic art style and directorial voice, Yuasa began his career as an animator on the landmark television series Chibi Maruko-chan (1990–1992) and Crayon Shin-chan (1992–present), before moving into directing with the feature film Mind Game (2004) and developing a cult appeal following.
Yuasa spent much of the 2000s and early 2010s working in television directing, helming a trio of series, Kemonozume (2006), Kaiba (2008), and The Tatami Galaxy (2010), before releasing the crowdfunded short film Kick-Heart (2013).
At Science SARU, Yuasa focused on directing both television and feature film productions, starting with an episode of the American animated series Adventure Time (2014), and continuing with Ping Pong the Animation (2014), The Night Is Short, Walk On Girl (2017), Lu Over the Wall (2017), Devilman Crybaby (2018), Ride Your Wave (2019), Super Shiro (2019), Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken! (2020),Japan Sinks: 2020 (2020),[and Inu-Oh (2021). His works, as you can guess, have won plenty of awards and Kaiba is just as imaginative and unique as any of his other works. I implore you to check it out. Not just for the animation but for the characters and the story. It's beautiful in its own way.) Read Note

In addition, he possesses a strange cell phone loaded with 8.2 billion yen in digital cash.
Despite Takizawa's suspicious traits, Saki quickly befriends the enigmatic young man. However, unbeknownst to her, this is the beginning of a thrilling death game involving money, cell phones, and the salvation of the world. Not perfect but I'd say it's pretty darn good for what it is. And there are follow-up movies that complete the series completely too. Don't forget those. I think it is a well-written show overall.)

(Story: On November 22, 2010, Japan was attacked, an act that fortunately did not harm anyone, becoming known as "Careless Monday." Quickly forgotten, society goes on about their lives as normal.
During her graduation trip to America three months later, friendly college student Saki Morimi's life is forever changed when she finds herself saved from unexpected trouble by Akira Takizawa. Takizawa is cheerful, but odd in many ways—he is stark naked and suffers from amnesia, believing himself to be a terrorist.
Higashi no Eden chronicles Saki's struggle to unravel the mysteries behind her savior, while Takizawa himself battles other individuals armed with similar cell phones and returning memories which reveal his possible connection to the event from months ago.)

Sakamichi no Apollon (Kids on the Slope)
(Story: The series follows Kaoru Nishimi, an introverted high school student who discovers jazz music through his friendship with his delinquent classmate Sentarō Kawabuchi.)
(Genre: Coming-of-Age, Romance, Slice of Life, Drama)
(Released 2012, 12 episodes, PG-13)
(Notes: Surprised this one is as underrated as it is. It's real nice and cozy and the jazz is great. It's a nice one to chill out to despite some of the more dramatic moments. The characters are likeable as well. And yes, this is another MAPPA one. But Tezuka Productions also worked on it. Y'know , the same studio behind Dororo, Quintessential Quintuplets, and the classics Black Jack and Astro Boy. And more absolute bops as OP and ED songs?? Must be my birthday.) Read Note

The Rose of Versailles
(Story: In a time of class stratification and rising tensions amongst the impoverished population, the Austrian Empire sends Princess Marie Antoinette to France to be wed to Crown Prince Louis XVI. The political marriage is arranged to strengthen the alliance between both countries, but the future queen is deeply unsatisfied with her fate being decided for her. Upon arrival in the country, Marie Antoinette is acquainted with Oscar Fançois de Jarjayes—Commander of the Royal Guard.
Due to her father's desire for a son, Oscar is raised as a boy with an expectation to inherit his title as The Commander. Though she is revered by both men and women alike, Oscar cannot help but desire to live life as a woman instead of masquerading as a man. As Oscar reluctantly serves the young, spoiled queen, the growing resentment and suffering of the poor become harder for her to ignore—especially when Marie Antoinette frivolously spends her wealth.)
(Genre: Drama, Romance)
(Released 1979; 40 episodes; PG-13 Edit: im a dingus who had this as "PG-23" for 19 hours imma cry now)
(Notes: This is a very interesting one and a very important one in manga (and anime) history in general. This series was developed during a significant transitional period for shōjo manga (manga for girls) as a medium, characterized by the emergence of stories with complex narratives focused on politics and sexuality. The Rose of Versailles would ultimately become the first shōjo manga to achieve mainstream critical and commercial success, proving the genre's viability as a commercial category and granting the genre greater recognition among critics. It contributed significantly to the development of shōjo manga, and was one of the primary works responsible for its shift from a genre aimed at children to a genre aimed at adolescents and young adults. By 2022, the manga had sold over 23 million copies worldwide. So yeah. Also, underrated as heck especially given how influential it is. I wish it was brought up more. Not just for its importance but actual amazing story, characters, etc. If you have time, check it out. Also, these OP and ED songs are beautiful im gonna cry. I really miss these kinds of OP and ED songs tbh) Read Note

Kare Kano
(Story: Yukino Miyazawa is the female representative for her class and the most popular girl among the freshmen at her high school. Good at both academics and sports on top of being elegant and sociable, she has been an object of admiration all her life. However, in reality, she is an incredibly vain person who toils relentlessly to maintain her good grades, athleticism, and graceful appearance. She wants nothing more than to be the center of attention and praise—which is why she cannot stand Souichirou Arima, the male representative for her class and the only person more perfect than her.)
(Genre: Drama, Romance, Comedy)
(Released 1998; 26 episodes; PG-13)
(Notes: Woooo 60th recommendation! Let's goooo! I haven't recommended a straight up romance in awhile, huh? This is a classic that gets overlooked alot nowadays. I was surprised at how enjoyable this one ended up being. I like it alot more than most romance anime, with a few exceptions, so give it a shot! It's also called His and Her Circumstances. Oh and fun fact: Hideaki Anno, the creator of Neon Genesis Evangelion, spearheaded this anime right after The End of Evangelion. Cool, right? Sadly, this anime is unfinished but it is still worth it and the story wrapped up in the manga so there's still that. Still worth watching in my opinion.) Read Note

Katanagatari
(Story: Katanagatari is the story of Yasuri Shichika, a swordsman who fights without a sword, and Togame, an ambitious young strategist who seeks to collect 12 legendary swords for the shogunate. Shichika is the son of an exiled war hero and the seventh head of the Kyotouryuu school of fighting who lives on the isolated Fushou Island with his elder sister, Nanami. Togame seeks him out because his bare-handed fighting style means that he will not be corrupted by the power of the swords. Togame, who has been betrayed before, convinces Shichika to accompany her on a mission to locate the Deviant Blades. They embark on a journey together across Edo-era Japan to collect the Deviant Blades, all wielded by formidable opponents.)
(Genre: Action, Adventure, Historical, Romance)
(Released 2010; 12 episodes; TV-MA)
(Notes: I kinda love these designs and this art style. It's unique and refreshing. This is a pretty good show in my opinion. Kinda flew under the radar but the few people I've seen who know about it seem to agree it's good. The anime studio behind this one is White Fox. You may not know them by name but you may have seen of or heard the other shows they've worked on such as Akame Ga Kill, Steins; Gate, Re:Zero, The Devil is a Part Timer, Arifureta, Jormungand, etc. Oh, and Katanagatari was originally created by Nisio Isin. Yes, the same person behind Monogatari, Medaka Box, and Bishounen Tanteidan; a show I've recommended here before. Also i really like these OPs lmao) Read Note
