Key the Metal Idol
(Story: Tokiko Mima, nicknamed "Key," is a 17-year-old girl living in the Japanese countryside who, despite her human-like appearance, is a robot. When Key's grandfather Dr. Murao Mima passes away, he leaves her a dying message, telling her that she can become a real girl if she is able to make thirty thousand friends. Thus, Key moves from the quiet Mamio Valley to the busy streets of Tokyo, where she soon runs into her childhood friend Sakura Kuriyagawa.
Key quickly becomes enamored with idol singer Miho Utsuse and wonders if becoming a singer will allow her to make the amount of friends needed for her to become human. But Miho carries a ominous secret: she is connected to Jinsaku Ajou, an old rival of Dr. Mima trying to make new a breakthrough in robotic weaponry. As Key works to become a real girl, Ajou sets a dangerous plan into action, and it turns out there's much more to Key than meets the eye. Source: MyAnimeList)
(Genre: Action, Drama, Sci-Fi, Psychological)
(Released 1994; OVA; 15 episodes: TV-MA)
(Notes: Rated TV-MA for a reason. But i think this is a solid one. Key is an endearing character. And if you know me, i have a bias towards older anime and their art and animation and nusic. It's just incomparable. There's some strangeness in this one but it's cool overall. The studio behind this one is Studio Pierrot. They're the same animation studio behind Naruto, Naruto: Shippuden, Bleach, Bleach: Thousand Year Blood War, Black Clover, Tokyo Ghoul, Yona of the Dawn, Great Teacher Onizuka, Yu Yu Hakusho, Boruto, Beelzebub, Twin Star Exorcists, etc. You can find Key the Metal Idol on RetroCrush, Freevee, Amazon Prime Video, and Crunchyroll's premium subscription as far as i can tell.) Robot Carnival
(Story: 9 of Japan's leading animators were asked to create a short segment that followed the theme of "Robots," for their inclusion in this film. Essentially, this "movie" is 9 short films, all independant of one another. The common element is human interaction with robots, namely the consequences of creating life with one's own hands, played in nine very different ways.)
(Source: ANN; MyAnimeList)
1: Opening (Atsuko Fukushima and Katsuhiro Otomo)
2: Franken's Gears (Koji Morimoto)
3: Deprive (Hidetoshi Omori)
4: Presence (Yasuomi Umetsu)
5: Star Light Angel (Hiroyuki Kitazume)
6: Cloud (Mao Lamdo)
7: A Tale of Two Robots (Hiroyuki Kitakubo)
8: Nightmare (Takashi Nakamura)
9: Ending (Atsuko Fukushima and Katsuhiro Otomo)
(Genre: Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Mecha, Drama, Comedy, etc)
(Released 1987; OVA; Movie; 91 MIN; PG-13)
(Notes: Well. This was a trip. Uh. I dont wanna spoil too much but this was pretty interesting. Of course, the animation, detail and designs were amazing. Because yes. Retro anime art style is still the best. Fight me. I wish there were more projects like this still being made. It's just so creative. You may like some segments more than others but that's a given. They're all so wildly unique. You can find this film for free on RetroCrush, the full English sub on RetroCrush's YouTube channel, Tubi, Freevee, PlutoTV, Amazon Prime Video, Vudu, Peacock, SlingTV but for Crunchyroll i think you may need a premium subscription.) Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water
(Story: In 1889, the world is on the pinnacle of great discoveries in technology. In mankind's grasp for the future, a sinister foe known only as Gargoyle, obsessed with restoring the former Atlantean empire to the glory it once held, begins his plans to take over the world. Nadia, with the help of a young inventor, Jean Roque Lartigue, and Captain Nemo of the submarine Nautilus, must fight to save the world from Gargoyle and Neo-Atlantis. Based on the Novel '20,000 Leagues Under the Sea' by Jules Verne.)
(Genre: Adventure, Comedy, Romance, Sci-Fi)
(Released 1990; 39 episodes; TV-14)
(Notes: This is one where you've probably seen a chatracteror two before but you've never seen the show. Well, I'm here to officially recommend it. And I haven't mentioned this before but i get the story/synopsis from MyAnimeList since... I'm bad at summarizing things. I'll go off on a tangent and add irrelevant crap. Anyway, did you know this series won the Animage Anime Grand Prix in 1990? AND it's Studio Gainax's FIRST ever anime. Remainder: Gainax is responsible for Neon Genesis Evangelion, Royal Space Force, Gunbuster, Kare Kano, FLCL, Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi, Gurren Lagann, Corpse Princess, Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt, Medaka Box and Re: Cutie Honey. I like this one. It's cozy, charming, fun and the story and characters are great. Again, retro anime art style is peak. 10/10. This show needs way more love. So check it out if you can. It's on Crunchyroll, Sling TV, Apple TV, Vudu, RetroCrush i think [BTW RetroCrush is a free service that let's you watch old/classic/retro anime. It's where I found City Hunter, Gokudo and Kimagure Orange Road ; which are other shows I've recommended before. Check it out.], Amazon Prime Video if i remember correctly and there may be more but if i find more I'll edit this.) Read Note

Chuuka Ichiban
(Story: The story takes place in 19th century China during the Qing Dynasty, where the Emperor was weakened and the country was close to chaos. It is also during a fictitious era called "The Era of the Cooking Wars". It was an era in which top chefs with different cooking styles tried their best to improve their skills and to become the best chef in China. It is a country where insulting a high-grade chef or fooling around with cooking could land a person in a jail, and impersonating a top-chef is as good as usurpation of authority. Chefs compete with each other in order to gain respect and even power, but also with the risks of losing everything.
The country of China has four major regions: Beijing, Szechuan, Shanghai, and Guangdong.
The beginning of the story takes place in Szechuan, Mao's birthplace.
After the death of Mao's mother, Pai, who was called the 'Fairy of Cuisine', Mao becomes a Super Chef in order to take the title as Master Chef of his mother's restaurant. However, before he takes his mother's place as Master Chef, he continues to travel China in order to learn more of the many ways of cooking, in the hopes of becoming a legendary chef, just like his mother. During his journey, he meets great friends and fierce rivals who wish to challenge him in the field of cooking.)
(Genre: Action, Comedy, Drama, Gourmet/Cooking)
(Released 1997; 52 episodes; TV-14)
(Notes: If i wanna watch a cooking anime, this is a good pick...if you don't want the 'awkwardness' of Food Wars tbh. If you understand what i'm implying. It's enjoyable. Not perfect, but it's fun and the setting is unique. It's a bit goofy and over the top but hey. It's fun so i don't mind. There was a reboot but we don't talk about that.) Read Note

Sorcerous Stabber Orphen (1998)
(Story: Six years ago at the magic school known as the Tower of Fang, a grave accident happened involving the magical sword Baltanders and the magic user Azalie. Unable to control the sword's power, Azalie was transformed into the shape of a great dragon who since that day became known as Bloody August. Krilancelo, a young magician at the Tower who cared greatly for Azalie found much to his disgust that the elders of the Tower of Fang were less than willing to save Azalie and wanted rather to pretend the accident never happened. Angered by their stand, Krilanceloa swore that he would find a way to return Azalie to her former self. Thus he forsook the name Krilancelo and declared himself Orphen, leaving the Tower and his magical studies behind to wander the world...)
(Genre: Action, Adventure, Comedy, Fantasy, Sword and Sorcery)
(Released 1998; 24 episodes; TV-14)
(Notes: Why is the OP song so funky? The ending song is super good too. Gosh dang. I can't believe i said 'gosh dang' unironically. Crying rn. Anyway, this is an enjoyable little show. Not gonna break any new ground but for what it is, it's fun. It aired on Adult Swim before. But people don't talk about it or even mention it really but i am. Orphen has drip, that's all im saying. Oh and steer clear of the 2020 reboot of this show. It isn't as good. And again, the retro anime art style always slaps. At least in my opinion.) Read Note

Legend of the Galactic Heroes (1988)
(Story: The 150-year-long stalemate between the two interstellar superpowers, the Galactic Empire and the Free Planets Alliance, comes to an end when a new generation of leaders arises: the idealistic military genius Reinhard von Lohengramm, and the FPA's reserved historian, Yang Wenli.
While Reinhard climbs the ranks of the Empire with the aid of his childhood friend, Siegfried Kircheis, he must fight not only the war, but also the remnants of the crumbling Goldenbaum Dynasty in order to free his sister from the Kaiser and unify humanity under one genuine ruler. Meanwhile, on the other side of the galaxy, Yang—a strong supporter of democratic ideals—has to stand firm in his beliefs, despite the struggles of the FPA, and show his pupil, Julian Mintz, that autocracy is not the solution.
As ideologies clash amidst the war's many casualties, the two strategic masterminds must ask themselves what the real reason behind their battle is.)
(Genre: Drama, Sci-fi, Space Opera)
(Released 1988; 60 minute movie + 110 episode OVA; TV-MA)
(Notes: Insert obvious 69 joke here. But in all seriousness. All i can say about this show is wow. Like, wow. I would gladly call this one of the best anime out there. Even today; yes. i stand by that. Why do i never see anyone mention this? Great writing, great characters, interesting conflicts and messages, it really makes you think, obviously i dig the retro anime art style and character designs ; y'all already know. But when I'm talking about this show, I'm talking about the 80s show. i haven't watched the 2022 movies but the 80s show is just a chef's kiss. Like, it's super high up there. Honestly, they shoulda just stopped at the 80s anime. This is peak, thought-provoking and amazing writing oml i can't praise this show enough im gonna cry and the ops and endings oh boy the songs it just has this feeling. Maybe it's an 80s or old school anime thing but idk i just don't wanna overhype the show but it's so good i swear. i mean, in my opinion obviously but geez i love this. Oh and yeah this anime is obviously for mature audiences so yep. I'll check out the 2022 adaptation though to see if it's good.) Read Note

The Rose of Versailles
(Story: In a time of class stratification and rising tensions amongst the impoverished population, the Austrian Empire sends Princess Marie Antoinette to France to be wed to Crown Prince Louis XVI. The political marriage is arranged to strengthen the alliance between both countries, but the future queen is deeply unsatisfied with her fate being decided for her. Upon arrival in the country, Marie Antoinette is acquainted with Oscar Fançois de Jarjayes—Commander of the Royal Guard.
Due to her father's desire for a son, Oscar is raised as a boy with an expectation to inherit his title as The Commander. Though she is revered by both men and women alike, Oscar cannot help but desire to live life as a woman instead of masquerading as a man. As Oscar reluctantly serves the young, spoiled queen, the growing resentment and suffering of the poor become harder for her to ignore—especially when Marie Antoinette frivolously spends her wealth.)
(Genre: Drama, Romance)
(Released 1979; 40 episodes; PG-13 Edit: im a dingus who had this as "PG-23" for 19 hours imma cry now)
(Notes: This is a very interesting one and a very important one in manga (and anime) history in general. This series was developed during a significant transitional period for shōjo manga (manga for girls) as a medium, characterized by the emergence of stories with complex narratives focused on politics and sexuality. The Rose of Versailles would ultimately become the first shōjo manga to achieve mainstream critical and commercial success, proving the genre's viability as a commercial category and granting the genre greater recognition among critics. It contributed significantly to the development of shōjo manga, and was one of the primary works responsible for its shift from a genre aimed at children to a genre aimed at adolescents and young adults. By 2022, the manga had sold over 23 million copies worldwide. So yeah. Also, underrated as heck especially given how influential it is. I wish it was brought up more. Not just for its importance but actual amazing story, characters, etc. If you have time, check it out. Also, these OP and ED songs are beautiful im gonna cry. I really miss these kinds of OP and ED songs tbh) Read Note

(Story: Yukino Miyazawa is the female representative for her class and the most popular girl among the freshmen at her high school. Good at both academics and sports on top of being elegant and sociable, she has been an object of admiration all her life. However, in reality, she is an incredibly vain person who toils relentlessly to maintain her good grades, athleticism, and graceful appearance. She wants nothing more than to be the center of attention and praise—which is why she cannot stand Souichirou Arima, the male representative for her class and the only person more perfect than her.)
(Genre: Drama, Romance, Comedy)
(Released 1998; 26 episodes; PG-13)
(Notes: Woooo 60th recommendation! Let's goooo! I haven't recommended a straight up romance in awhile, huh? This is a classic that gets overlooked alot nowadays. I was surprised at how enjoyable this one ended up being. I like it alot more than most romance anime, with a few exceptions, so give it a shot! It's also called His and Her Circumstances. Oh and fun fact: Hideaki Anno, the creator of Neon Genesis Evangelion, spearheaded this anime right after The End of Evangelion. Cool, right? Sadly, this anime is unfinished but it is still worth it and the story wrapped up in the manga so there's still that. Still worth watching in my opinion.) Read Note

Iria: Zeiram the Animation
(Story: Iria is the story of a girl and the Alien being she loves to hate. The series begins with her brother, Gren, taking a job. He is a bounty hunter, and one well known for his incredible skill. Iria, being a skilled apprentice bounty hunter herself, tags along. What is the job, one might ask. It is to find out what has happened to the crew and cargo of a Space Station. Needless to say, nothing is as it seems, and the war between Iria and Zeiram begins in earnest.)
(Genre: Action, Adventure, Sci-fi, Space)
(Released 1994; OVA; 6 episodes; TV-MA)
(Notes: Iria is best girl. 10/10 bounty hunter. Also, again, love the art style because retro anime art style is best art style. Sorry, i dont make the rules. The anime studio behind this one is Ashi Productions; the same studio that has worked on Eureka Seven, the infamous Minky Momo, Macross, Vampire Hunter D, etc. They've also been involved with the production of Death Note.) Gunbuster was the directorial debut of Hideaki Anno, best known as the creator and director of Neon Genesis Evangelion. And the anime studio behind Gunbuster? Gainax. You know, the same studio behind Neon Genesis Evangelion, Gurren Lagann, FLCL(Fooly Cooly; btw just watch the first season of FLCL the others aren't worth it), Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt, Ebichu, Re: Cutey Honey, etc..Also, there may be some flashing colors and lights in the actual show, just as a warning. Yokohama Kaidashi Kikō
(Story: Yokohama Kaidashi Kikō is set in a peaceful, post-cataclysmic world where mankind is in decline after an environmental disaster. Sea levels have risen significantly, inundating coastal cities such as Yokohama, Mount Fuji erupted in living memory, and climate change has occurred. With the seasons being less pronounced, the winters are milder and the summer isn't scorching anymore. The reduced human population has reverted to a simpler life, and this is the twilight of the human age. Instead of raging against their fate, humans have quietly accepted it.
Alpha Hatsuseno is an android who runs an out-of-the-way coffee shop, Café Alpha, on the lonely coast of the Miura Peninsula of Japan, while her human "owner" is on a trip of indefinite length. Though she spends much of her time alone, Alpha is cheerful, gregarious, and—unlike the slowly declining humans—immortal.)
(Genre: Science Fiction, Iyashikei, Slice of Life)
(Released 1998; OVA; 2 episodes)
(Notes: This is both the most sad and depressing yet peaceful and hopeful anime I've ever watched. I believe there was like..another version of this one in the 2000s but we're focusing on the 90s one. i know this anime is pretty underrated, if not obscure to a lot of you. I watched it on YouTube actually and I'm pretty sure its actually okay to watch for all ages. Rare, right? The animation studio behind it, Ajia-do, also animated Ascendence of a Bookworm and How Not to Summon a Demon Lord. And guess what? they also made an anime movie about the Magic Tree House. Yep. The same American children's book The Magic Treehouse. I bet alot of people didnt even know that existed. Based directly on The Magic Tree House series, award winning series of children books written by American author Mary Pope Osborne. Cool, right ?)

Kimagure Orange Road
(Story: Kyōsuke Kasuga and his family had to move several times after being seen using their esper powers. Upon settling for the seventh time, Kyōsuke briefly meets a pretty girl who gives him her straw-hat and falls in love with her on sight. On the first day of school he learns this girl is his junior high classmate Madoka Ayukawa, who, contrary to his initial impression, is feared as a tough and no-nonsense delinquent. Their underclassman (and Madoka's best friend), Hikaru Hiyama, sees Kyōsuke use his powers to sink an impressive basketball shot and falls in love with him. Kyōsuke ends up dating Hikaru while constantly struggling with his feelings for Madoka due to his indecisiveness. Likewise, Madoka has feelings for Kyōsuke which she masks with her capricious nature for fear of hurting her friend Hikaru.)
(Genre: Romantic Comedy, Supernatural, Drama)
(Released 1987; 48 episodes plus 2 movies to officially wrap up and finish the story. Watch the movies too if you wanna know how it ends after watching the series)
(Notes: Certified hood classic lmao okay i digress, it's good. Madoka is obvious best girl duh (she's the black haired girl) and i like this more than most romantic anime also..that art style is sooooooo good. Produced by Toho; who also produced Your Name, Spirited Away, Another, Weathering with You, Akira, Beastars, Wolf Children, Ponyo, the second My Hero Academia movie, the Tatami Galaxy, most of the Naruto movies at least, Black Rock Shooter, etc. As for the animation studio? Pierrot. Pierrot also animated Naruto, Tokyo Ghoul, Naruto:Shippuden, the original Bleach anime, Black Clover, YuYu Hakusho, Yona of the Dawn, Great Teacher Onizuka, etc.
Kimagure Orange Road was a highly influential series, with sales of over 20 million copies in Japan alone. It is credited alongside Dragon Ball for introducing an entire generation of Europeans to anime and manga. It was also an archetypal shōnen romantic comedy, a genre which it had a major influence on, and the character Madoka is considered to be a root of the tsundere archetype. The anime's Christmas episode also featured an early use of the time loop plot device. So why is it here in the underrated list? because y'all dont talk about it and probably havent watched it dang it instead of rent a girlfriend watch this, its actually good and has not-annoying, not-flat characters and the songs in Kimagure Orange Road are bops, sorry, i dont make the rules and R.I.P to the creator of the Kimagure Orange Road manga Izumi Matsumoto)

Queen Emeraldas
(Story: The story revolves around a race that seeks to dominate the galaxy. A lone mysterious female warrior, known to others as Emeraldas sails the endless planets of the universe- in her Seas of Star ship- fighting the tyranny of that merciless race. She is tormented by the memory of her lost love.)
(Genre: Space Opera, Space Western, Action, Adventure, Sci-fi)
(Released 1998; OVA; 4 episodes)
(Notes: Another cool one i found on a trailer in that old Sailor Moon DVD i used to watch all the dang time. This one is based off of a manga created by the legendary Leiji Matsumoto, may he rest in piece. Matsumoto was famous for his space operas such as Space Battleship Yamato and Galaxy Express 999. His style was characterized by mythological and often tragic storylines with strong moral themes, noble heroes, feminine heroines, and a love of strange worlds and melancholic atmosphere. You may have seen his art style at least; emulated by shows like Steven Universe. Blue Diamond's design is obviously heavily influenced by his art style and i remember it being confirmed as well. The widow of Matsumoto, Miyako Maki, is also a Japanese manga artist, and one of the earliest female manga artists. During the 1960s, Maki contributed significantly to the development of shōjo manga (manga for girls), and became one of the most popular shōjo authors of her generation. She later became a pioneer in manga for adults so theres a lot of history here too. Also, i really love this art style. Lets goooo retro anime art) Read Note

City Hunter (1st series; also a flashing lights/colors warning)
(Story: The adventures of Ryo Saeba, a gun-for-hire living in the Tokyo metropolis with his partner; the willful tomboy Kaori Makimura to keep him in line.)
(Genre: Action, Detective, Comedy, Mystery, Drama)
(Released 1987; 51 episodes for the first series - the one i watched)
(Notes: Yes, it is a product of its time; the 80s, it was a different time and I'm not saying that makes it okay, but i just can't help but love the series, the characters, the art and aesthetic. And yes, this series was animated and produced by Sunrise; the studio behind Code Geass, the original Cowboy Bebop anime, Inuyasha, Love Live, etc. I personally love City Hunter even though i recognize some of it didn't age well. Are the OP and ED songs certified classics and bops? yes they are. Is Kaori best girl? also yes. I would say this show is okay for older teens?.. Closer to 17 at the very least and older. City Hunter also has multiple series, movies, spin-offs, and adaptations. You can find it on RetroCrush for free, PlutoTV for free, Crunchyroll, Roku Channel (?), and on Apple TV.) Read Note

Birdy the Mighty (Tetsuwan Birdy) OVA
(Story: Tsutomu, an average middle school kid busy studying for the final exams to enter high school runs into a man running from someone and gets caught up in the chase. In all the confusion he is accidentally killed. Luckily Birdy (an interplanetary agent) knows a way to save him, unfortunately that means joining bodies to become one. So now he is stuck with this officer and along for the ride capturing criminals and saving lives.)
(Genre: Action, Science Fiction, Comedy)
(Released 1996; 4 episodes, TV-14; for older audiences)
(Notes: Again, love the art style. Old anime had great style. Great action and animation. Also, can i say i love Birdy's facial expressions and animation? This is a weird tangent but her expressions aren't overly cutesy? like, i'm not knocking on making anime girls remain cute when they emote but hers feel more..uh..real? Unique? if that makes sense. I'm bad at explaining. I'm glad they give her shots where she smiles like a maniac is what i'm saying. And not in the cutesy yandere kind of way most shows do now if that makes sense. It feels more natural. Fun fact: this OVA was animated by Madhouse. The same animation studio responsible for animating the first season of One Punch Man, the original Trigun, Hunter x Hunter 2011, Perfect Blue, Black Lagoon, Parasyte, Wolf Children, Death Note, the first Beyblade anime, etc. Also, Birdy's japanese voice actress is Kotono Mitsuishi: voice of Sailor Moon/Usagi in the original Sailor Moon series as well as Sailor Moon Crystal, Boa Hancock from One Piece, Misato from Evangelion, and Tae Yamada from Zombie Land Saga. Also there is a reboot of Birdy the Mighty called Birdy the Mighty: Decode but I'd say that one is for much older audiences too but it's also pretty underrated.) Read Note

Gokudo the Adventurer
(Story: The story focuses on an adventurer named Gokudo. Unlike most protagonists he is an antihero, willing to resort to violence to fulfill his agenda. He does not hesitate to abuse the needs of people, sell out his friends to save himself, run away from any dangers, or ditch others who helped him if he does not have any more interest in them. His life starts to change when he finds a magical Genie named Djinn who wants to grant him three wishes. While people would benefit from having three wishes, in his case it leads him to a lot of trouble, and it doesn't take long before he tries to escape from Djinn, and every other person he meets.
Other important characters are the Old Seer, who constantly appears out of nowhere, seemingly only to make Gokudo suffer more; Rubette La Lette, a noble girl with a tomboy attitude who sees Gokudo as a rival; and Prince, a mage much better at handling women than Gokudo will ever be.)
(Genre: Action, Supernatural, Comedy, Adventure, Fantasy)
(Released 1999; 26 episodes)
(Notes: This was pretty fun ngl. Sometimes it's nice to just vibe with some pretty entertaining characters. Gokudo can be a jerk sometimes though. Words can't describe how much i love this art style and animation. i love how retro anime looked) Read Note
