【Study of Today】These shows continued for over 50 years!! What are they?
Japan’s anime are without question beloved by many and gaining fans world wide, movies and dramas also have their success, but did you know Japan also has a unique form of shows?
Tokusatsu (special filming) is a Japanese term for live action film or television drama that makes heavy use of special effects. These shows existed in Japan for a very long period and still have a strong fan base. One of them is getting a 50 year anniversary this year, and it is not even the oldest!
You may think, what the hell is Tokusatsu? However, you may already have watched them without watching them!
■1. Super Sentai
Case in point, the first Super Sentai released in 1975, each series revolves around a team of youths recruited and trained by a mentor to defeat unknown evil forces, able to use special powers and pilot immense assault machines.
TBH, they are too many if all standing together
Sounds familiar? That's because the famous Power Rangers is adopte from the Super Sentai series! Each series has their own features, but two things never change, teamwork and friendship are the key to anything!
■2. Kamen Rider
This year is its 50th anniversary, often compared to Super Sentai, like power ranger it also have a few series released in US, but did not gain as much success.
International popularity aside, the Kamen Rider series are actually more popular in Japan than Super Sentai. Due to the fact it reached into deeper content like betrayal and survival, kamen riders are not necessarily the heros, have a variety of themes like race conflict, greediness, even battle royale!
■3. Ultraman
If Superman is the most beloved alien in America, Ultraman is the most beloved alien in Japan. For over 55 years the Ultra Series introduces giant aliens with incredible powers working with their human partner, protecting earth from other aliens with bad intentions.
Unlike other heros who are mostly human, these red and silver folks are legit aliens from other planet!
As an advanced being, Ultraman depacted a fresh point of view. Even if they protect earth from aliens, they can not protect humans from each other. Humans generate wars, environment pollution, and all kinds of extreme methods to protect their property. Are humans even worth protection?
You might be more familiar with the Netflix anime version, which is under the same world of the original series but instead of transform to Ultraman, the characters fight aliens with their iron suit!
■4. Godzilla
Suprise Suprise, I am sure most of you are familiar with Godzilla, afterall Hollywood released its three movies that provide a bunch of thrills with advanced CG.
But if you go back in time, Godzilla was one of the first Tokusatsu movie series with a… Very different look@@
As a matter of fact, Godzilla has different appearances in order to fit its image in each movie. Japan released their own new Godzilla movie in 2016, they insisted on using real suits to present Godzilla, and like its original series in Japan, it is a ruthless monster that aims to destroy everything in front of it
Till these days, Tokusatsu is still a very popular genre in Japan, it is like Doctor Who, each generation has their unique features, but the fun is the same!If you like this note, make sure to smash the like and follow me for more content!!
