【Study of Today】The Unstoppable Isekai Boom!!

As many January almost meet mid way, many new anime are here for us, and one category - Isekai keeps shining!Although some fans claim that they are sick of the constantly emerging Isekai anime, their high view, good book and blu-ray sales show that Isekai is still a very popular theme for anime and its fans.

The earliest Isekai anime actually are very different from the Isekai anime now, back then Isekai can refer to any time and space as long as it isn’t morden Japan, like the Ancient Japan in InuYasha or the Digital World in Digimon Adventure.

The extraordinary Digital World

The Familiar of Zero is commonly recognised as the first anime that fits into the modern Isekai anime category, which is summoned into a mid-century fantasy world where magic and other supernatural powers exist. 

The Familiar of Zero was a huge succes back in 2000s, inspire tons of fan-fiction writers, including the author of Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World Tappei Nagatsuki which we will speak of later.


Many fans misrecognized Sword Art online as Isekai anime, but technically Sword Art online’s theme is not Isekai but online games, so is overlord.

Modern Isekai anime first shows its potential with NO GAME NO LIFE, made huge succes a great story and cleverly uses Isekai to build a fascinating world with unique settings.

It fits in the Isekai category, but its outstanding and unique background make it quite different from the Isekai anime we know now

But in 2016, the popularity of modern Isekai anime is ignited by 2 anime! Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World and KonoSuba: God's Blessing on this Wonderful World! 

They are arguably two of the most popular Isekai anime there is, one has a serious and dark style, focus on the story, the other proves that casual comedy and Isekai is a great match. 

Konosuba announced an ongoing new anime production last year!

Two anime in similar backgrounds but completely different styles still come out with surprisingly good results, this makes the anime industry realize the potential in Isekai anime.

The factors that help Isekai anime with its success:

Mid-century fantasy world where magic and other supernatural powers existis is the common background for modern Isekai anime, from the perspective of the author, Isekai saves them the trouble of brainstorming tons of complicated settings, the same for the viewers as we don’t have to understand some long settings before we enjoy the show. Its Isekai, its mid-century fantasy world, where magic and other supernatural powers exist, and sometimes throw in settings like other species, Demon King and Hero, even game-like style. The author doesn't need to explain, viewers can dive into the show right away, a win-win for the author and viewers.

■2.The protagonist can be overpower fast

 In other anime, the protagonist usually needs to go through a ton of hell to learn a new ability or get an upgrade. But as the viewers these days all like to see the protagonist look cool and kick asses fast, the author thought, why don’t make him the strongest in the first place? Thus, most Isekai protagonists are given ridiculous powers or cheat abilities at the beginning of the show. Again save the author a lot of trouble, and the viewers are happy to watch.

■1.A Getaway from the Real World

Isekai is popular especially in Japan because with all the stress people face at school, at work or at home, many just want anime to help them to blow off some steam, and what is better than the anime with an easy to understand background and powerful protagonist? Maybe the popularity suggests how many people want to escape the real world and dive into the fantasy world of Isekai anime!
