Playing Games of Generals

I'm not much of an expert in board games but I know the rules for the game. 
2 years ago in our Intramurals, I was chosen to be our team's player for GoG, and I honestly have no idea about strategies and whatsoever.
I obviously lost two matches, making our team place last for the game, and of course, I was a bit frustrated. But just a bit, since it was pretty fun seeing my opponents panicking as I keep on talking about anything honestly, and because of my reputation as a second-honour student at that time
